Sex Ed Shouldn’t Take a Summer Break
How to Weave Body-Positive Learning Into Your Family's Summer
Summer might be made for sunshine, pool days, and popsicles—but you know what else it’s perfect for?
Learning about our amazing bodies, minds, and identities in fun, shame-free ways. ✨
At My Little Yoni, we believe sex ed isn’t just about sex. It’s about how we understand and care for our bodies, how we respect others, and how we create safe, loving spaces for kids to grow into confident humans. 💖
And just because school’s out doesn’t mean learning has to stop. Let’s use the freedom of summer to build body wisdom, spark curious convos, and nurture gender-affirming awareness—one magical moment at a time.
📚 1. Start with Books That Empower
Books are one of the best ways to teach without a lecture. When you read with your child, you create a space for curiosity, questions, and connection.
With the help of OBGYN, sex educator, and licensed psychologist partners, we’ve put together Yoni Magic, a 10 Sex Ed book series to put the empowering education directly into parents’ hands. This series includes a variety of topics from natural wonders of female and male anatomy to gender identity and diversity that were written and illustrated in a shame-free format.

🗣️ 2. Make Conversations Natural & Non-Judgy
Summer’s slower pace gives us a chance to talk more—especially during walks, drives, or dinner. Try asking:
“Have you ever heard the word ‘nonbinary’? Want to know what it means?”
“What do you think it means to feel good in your body?”
“Do you think everyone gets treated fairly based on how they look or identify?”
The goal isn’t to have all the answers—it’s to be open and show your child that these topics are safe to talk about.
💡 Body-Positive Tip: Avoid labeling parts of the body as “private” in a way that creates shame. Forget the euphemisms. We call a penis a penis, a vulva a vulva. When kids have accurate language for their bodies, they can communicate clearly and feel proud of their knowledge.
🎥 3. Choose Empowering Media Together
Media can either reinforce stereotypes—or open hearts and minds. Choose shows, books, and videos that feature:
Diverse body types and skin colors
Messages about self-love and respect
Watch or read together, then ask open-ended questions like:
“What did you like about that character?”
“Have you ever felt like them?”
“What do you think they were trying to express?”
💡 Body-Positive Tip: Point out when media only shows thin, white, cisgender characters—and use it as a teaching moment about why representation matters.
🌈 4. Embrace All Identities—And Encourage Kids to Be Themselves
Let your kids know they’re enough exactly as they are.
Whether they’re sporty or artsy, shy or loud, into glitter or mud pies—there’s no “right” way to be a kid. There’s only their way.
Model respect and curiosity, and let them see you embracing your own body and identity, too.
💡 Body-Positive Tip: Celebrate your body in front of them! Say things like:
“I love how strong my arms are.”
“This swimsuit makes me feel happy!”
“I’m grateful my body lets me dance, move, and rest.”
💖 Remember: This Isn’t a One-Time Talk—It’s a Lifelong Conversation
Just like bodies grow over time, so do kids’ questions—and their ability to understand complex ideas.
So whether your kid is asking about periods, puberty, or what the heck a “yoni” even is (😉), stay open, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to say:
“I don’t know, let’s find out together.”
Raising confident, respectful, whole kids isn’t just about school—it’s about what we do every day, in every season.
And Yoni Magic doesn’t take summers off.
With body joy and science-based magic,
My Little Yoni 💖
